Railways Fertilizer Coordination Ensures Record Supplies For Kharif And Rabi Seasons

Strong coordination between the Ministry of Railways and the Department of Fertilizers has significantly strengthened the timely availability of fertilizers to farmers during Kharif 2025 and the ongoing Rabi season, reinforcing food security and farm preparedness across the country.

Ensuring uninterrupted fertilizer supply remains one of the Government’s highest priorities. During Kharif 2025 and the current Rabi season, enhanced planning, close inter-ministerial coordination and real-time monitoring resulted in faster and smoother movement of fertilizer rakes to States. The Department of Fertilizers has appreciated the Ministry of Railways for this sustained cooperation, noting that the coordinated effort has translated into visible improvements at the ground level, with no reported shortages during critical stages of crop cultivation.

Operational efficiency improved steadily during the peak Kharif months, with average rake loading rising from 72 rakes per day in July 2025 to 78 rakes per day in August 2025 and further to 80 rakes per day in September 2025, reflecting improved logistical planning and execution.

During the financial year 2025–26, from April to December 2025, the Government ensured comfortable availability of all major fertilizers across States. Urea availability stood well above assessed demand, while phosphatic and potassic fertilizers also exceeded requirements, ensuring uninterrupted supply to farmers. States simultaneously strengthened last-mile distribution to ensure fertilizers reached farmers in time.

Total Supplies of Major Fertilizers April to December 2025 (In Lakh Metric Tons)

Fertilizer Category Requirement Availability
Urea 312.40 350.45
P&K Fertilizers (DAP, MOP, NPKS) 252.81 287.69

Fertilizer movement during April to December 2025 reached an all-time high, with net supplies crossing 530.16 lakh metric tons, surpassing the 500 lakh metric ton mark for the first time in this period. This represents a growth of 12.2 percent over the corresponding period of 2024–25 and is 8.5 percent higher than the previous record achieved in 2023–24.

Urea And P&K Rake Movement April to December 2025

Category Number of Rakes Growth Over Previous Year
Urea 10,841 8 percent
P&K Fertilizers 8,806 18 percent

Month-wise trends from July to January, up to 13 January, also show a sustained increase in rake movement compared to the same period last year, underlining the consistency of operations through both Kharif and Rabi seasons.

The improved performance in fertilizer movement reflects robust advance planning, real-time coordination among the Ministry of Railways, Ports, State Governments and fertilizer companies, proactive resolution of logistical bottlenecks and focused monitoring at both State and national levels. These efforts have collectively ensured that farmers across the country receive timely fertilizer supplies, supporting agricultural productivity and national food security.
