The Ministry of Ayush will inaugurate the ninth edition of Siddha Day celebrations in Chennai on January 3, with the national observance scheduled for January 6. The event will be held at Kalaivanar Arangam and will focus on reinforcing the relevance of the Siddha system of medicine in contemporary and global healthcare under the theme Siddha for Global Health.
The celebrations are being organised by the Ministry of Ayush in collaboration with the National Institute of Siddha, the Central Council for Research in Siddha, and the Directorate of Indian Medicine and Homoeopathy of the Government of Tamil Nadu. Siddha Day is observed annually to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sage Agathiyar, regarded as the founding figure and guiding spirit of the Siddha medical tradition.
The Vice President of India will preside over and inaugurate the celebrations, underlining the national importance accorded to India’s traditional systems of medicine. The inaugural function will also be attended by senior leadership from both the Union and Tamil Nadu governments, including the Minister of State in charge of the Ministry of Ayush, the Tamil Nadu Health Minister, the Secretary of the Ministry of Ayush, and senior officials responsible for health policy, traditional medicine education, and research.
The event is expected to bring together a wide cross section of the Siddha ecosystem, including experienced practitioners, researchers, scientists, academicians, and scholars from across Tamil Nadu and other states. Students from government Siddha medical colleges in Chennai and Palayamkottai, as well as self financing Siddha colleges from Tamil Nadu and Kerala, are expected to participate in large numbers. Officials from statutory Siddha bodies and research institutions will also be present, reflecting the strong institutional framework supporting the system.
A key highlight of the programme will be the felicitation of five eminent personalities for their exemplary and sustained contributions to the advancement of Siddha medicine. The honours will recognise achievements in clinical practice, education, research, documentation, and the preservation of traditional knowledge, acknowledging individuals who have strengthened the system over decades.
The ninth Siddha Day celebrations will showcase the growing role of Siddha medicine in preventive healthcare, lifestyle disease management, drug research, and wellness promotion. Sessions and interactions during the event will highlight ongoing research initiatives, academic developments, and collaborative efforts aimed at integrating Siddha with broader healthcare delivery systems.
The theme Siddha for Global Health reflects the Ministry of Ayush’s vision of positioning Siddha medicine as a credible and effective contributor to international health and wellness frameworks. By promoting scientific validation, research collaboration, and academic excellence, the government aims to enhance global awareness and acceptance of Siddha as part of India’s traditional medical heritage.
