Minority Affairs Ministry outlines waqf documentation progress under UMEED framework

The Ministry of Minority Affairs on March 2, 2026 clarified the factual position regarding waqf property documentation and detailed the progress achieved under the UMEED framework, amid recent reports on the subject.

The Ministry stated that under the UMEED Act, 2025, a period of six months was provided from the launch of the UMEED Central Portal on June 6, 2025 for uploading details of waqf properties and properties dedicated to waqf. The stipulated period concluded on December 6, 2025.

The Act provides for a statutory remedy through Waqf Tribunals, which may grant an extension of up to six months upon being satisfied with the grounds presented. In accordance with these provisions, 17 States and Union Territories have been granted extensions ranging from two to six months from February 2026 onwards.

The Ministry acknowledged the cooperation extended by State Waqf Boards across the country in implementing the provisions of the Act and in facilitating the documentation process under the UMEED framework.

According to data available on the UMEED Portal as of March 2, 2026, a total of 6,29,527 waqf properties have been initiated for documentation. Of these, 2,87,695 properties have been validated and approved following verification, while 38,083 properties were rejected after due scrutiny.

The Ministry reiterated that the process of documentation, validation and approval is being carried out in accordance with the legal framework laid down under the UMEED Act, 2025, with appropriate oversight and procedural safeguards.
