Divya Kala Mela Showcases Divyang Talent as Governor Gurmit Singh Calls Them Key to India Economic Rise

The 30th edition of Divya Kala Mela was inaugurated at Rangers Ground in Dehradun, with Uttarakhand Governor Lt. Gen. Gurmit Singh describing persons with disabilities as a decisive force in India’s journey towards becoming the world’s third largest economy.

Addressing the gathering at the inauguration, Lt. Gen. Gurmit Singh said Divya Kala Mela is not merely an exhibition but a powerful platform of inspiration and enthusiasm that reflects the central role of Divyangjan in building an Aatmanirbhar Bharat. He noted that the creativity displayed at the Mela is a living expression of self reliance and economic participation.

The Governor highlighted the transformative role of artificial intelligence and technological innovation in expanding opportunities for persons with disabilities, stating that technology does not discriminate and can serve as a bridge to global markets. He called for products created by Divyang artisans and entrepreneurs at the Mela to reach international platforms, giving their talent worldwide recognition. With determination and capability, he said, Divyangjan can achieve excellence in every field.

Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment B. L. Verma said that the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016 and various welfare schemes implemented under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi have laid a strong foundation for mainstreaming Divyangjan. He informed that ₹375 crore has been allocated in the current budget through the Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India for procurement and distribution of assistive devices, directly benefiting a large number of individuals across the country.

Tehri Member of Parliament Mala Rajya Laxmi Shah described Divya Kala Mela as a catalyst for social transformation rather than just an event. She appreciated the efforts of the Government of India and the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment in bringing national level initiatives to Uttarakhand. Referring to India’s achievements in the Paralympics, she said talent knows no boundaries and platforms such as this strengthen confidence and visibility.

MLA Khajan Das termed the Mela a commendable initiative that provides dignity, opportunity and economic empowerment to Divyangjan. He said such platforms send a positive message to society and raise collective awareness about inclusion and equal participation.

In his welcome address, Pradeep A., Director, Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, said the Mela is designed as a comprehensive initiative to connect Divyang entrepreneurs with markets, financial institutions and employment opportunities. He added that assistive device registrations, institutional awareness stalls and job fairs are being organised alongside the exhibition to strengthen empowerment measures.

The Dehradun edition marks an important milestone in the nationwide series of Divya Kala Melas. So far, 29 editions across the country have witnessed participation from around 2362 individuals and generated business worth over ₹23 crore. The government has sanctioned loans exceeding ₹20 crore to promote Divyang entrepreneurship. Employment fairs held during previous editions saw participation of approximately 3131 candidates, of whom 1007 were shortlisted and more than 313 received job offers.

The nine day Mela in Dehradun features around 90 stalls, with participation from over 100 Divyang artisans, artists and entrepreneurs representing 16 States and Union Territories. Visitors can explore a wide range of products including handicrafts, handloom textiles, embroidery, home décor items, garments, organic food products, jewellery, toys and gift articles.

A special job fair is scheduled for February 26, 2026, and the cultural programme Divya Kala Shakti will be held on March 1, 2026, showcasing the artistic and performance talents of Divyang artists. The Mela, being held from February 21 to March 1, remains open daily from 11 AM to 9 PM with free entry for visitors.

With vibrant cultural performances, sports activities and assistive device registration facilities, Divya Kala Mela stands as an inclusive platform that links creativity with dignity, entrepreneurship with empowerment and social inclusion with economic growth.
