President approves major reshuffle of governors and lieutenant governors

A major administrative reshuffle involving governors and lieutenant governors across several states and union territories has been announced after the President accepted the resignation of C V Ananda Bose as Governor of West Bengal.

According to an official communiqué issued on 5 March 2026, the President has approved a series of new appointments and transfers affecting key constitutional positions across the country. The changes will take effect from the dates on which the appointees assume charge of their respective offices.

Shiv Pratap Shukla, currently serving as Governor of Himachal Pradesh, has been appointed as the new Governor of Telangana. Jishnu Dev Varma, who is presently the Governor of Telangana, has been appointed as the Governor of Maharashtra.

Nand Kishore Yadav has been appointed as the new Governor of Nagaland, while Lt General retired Syed Ata Hasnain has been appointed as the Governor of Bihar.

R N Ravi, currently serving as the Governor of Tamil Nadu, has been appointed as the Governor of West Bengal following the acceptance of the resignation of C V Ananda Bose.

Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, the current Governor of Kerala, has been assigned the responsibility to discharge the functions of the Governor of Tamil Nadu.

In another key change, Kavinder Gupta, who is currently serving as Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, has been appointed as the Governor of Himachal Pradesh.

Vinai Kumar Saxena, the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, has been appointed as the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh.

Taranjit Singh Sandhu has been appointed as the new Lieutenant Governor of Delhi.

The appointments represent a significant realignment of gubernatorial positions across multiple states and union territories, reflecting a broader restructuring of key constitutional roles in the country’s administrative framework.

Officials stated that the appointments will formally take effect once the newly designated governors and lieutenant governors assume office in their respective jurisdictions.
