India Launches First Tropical Rainbow Trout Farm Using Advanced Aquaculture Technology

India is set to mark a significant milestone in fisheries and aquaculture development with the inauguration of the Smart Green Aquaculture Farm and Research Institute and a state of the art Recirculatory Aquaculture System facility in Telangana. The facility will be inaugurated on 5 January 2026 in Hyderabad by Union Minister for Fisheries Animal Husbandry and Dairying and Panchayati Raj Rajiv Ranjan Singh following a General Body meeting.

Developed by Smart Green Aquaculture Limited at Kandukur Mandal in Ranga Reddy district Telangana the project represents India’s first commercial scale tropical recirculatory aquaculture system based rainbow trout farm and research institute. The initiative conclusively demonstrates that high value cold water species such as rainbow trout can be farmed year round under tropical climatic conditions through precision engineering controlled biological processes and advanced water recirculation technologies.

The successful farming of rainbow trout in Telangana overturns the long held belief that premium cold water aquaculture species are restricted to specific geographical and climatic zones. By establishing technology rather than climate as the key determinant of aquaculture viability the project opens new possibilities for diversification and expansion of high value aquaculture across non traditional regions.

The Smart Green Aquaculture facility has also been designed as a live training and demonstration platform. It aims to equip youth and professionals with hands on experience in modern aquaculture systems automation water quality management and biosecurity practices thereby strengthening skilled human capital in the fisheries sector and supporting employment generation.

The initiative aligns with the Government of India’s broader strategy to transform fisheries and aquaculture into a key engine of economic growth. Since 2015 the central government has approved or announced cumulative investments of Rs 38572 crore across various schemes to strengthen infrastructure productivity sustainability and market access in the fisheries sector.

Cold water fisheries are emerging as a high potential segment driven by rising demand for premium species expanding domestic and export markets and growing adoption of sustainable aquaculture technologies. Trout farming in particular has traditionally been concentrated in Himalayan and hill states such as Uttarakhand Himachal Pradesh Jammu and Kashmir Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim where snow fed streams provide cold well oxygenated water.

The Department of Fisheries has significantly enhanced trout production through the development of rainbow trout hatcheries and adoption of advanced aquaculture practices. Annual production has reached approximately 14 lakh trout seeds creating livelihood opportunities in remote and mountainous regions. Uttarakhand has also signed a memorandum of understanding with the Indo Tibetan Border Police under the Vibrant Villages Scheme to supply trout fish further integrating aquaculture with local development initiatives.

As part of its forward looking approach the Department of Fisheries has notified the development of cold water fisheries clusters in Jammu and Kashmir Ladakh Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. These clusters aim to strengthen infrastructure technology adoption and market linkages while ensuring environmentally sustainable growth.

By promoting modern systems such as recirculatory aquaculture species diversification capacity building and institutional reforms the Government of India is transitioning aquaculture from subsistence based practices to a technology driven market oriented ecosystem. The inauguration of the Smart Green Aquaculture Farm in Telangana marks a decisive step in this transformation positioning Indian aquaculture to meet growing domestic demand and emerging export opportunities in a sustainable and scalable manner.
