CSIR integrated skill initiative accelerates workforce readiness and industry aligned training

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research has positioned the CSIR Integrated Skill Initiative as a flagship national programme to strengthen India’s skilled workforce by directly linking scientific research with industry ready competencies. Aligned with the national vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Skill India, the initiative focuses on bridging the gap between laboratory knowledge and real world employability through structured and outcome driven skill development.

Designed to integrate science and technology with skilling, the initiative leverages CSIR’s extensive research infrastructure, nationwide laboratory network and multidisciplinary scientific expertise. It adopts an inclusive approach, reaching a wide spectrum of beneficiaries that includes students, early career researchers, technical staff and working professionals, as well as school dropouts, ITI and diploma holders, farmers and rural communities. The emphasis remains on aligning skill training with practical industrial needs, societal challenges and entrepreneurial opportunities.

The programme delivers short term and long term skilling modules through training courses, internships, certification programmes and hands on laboratory exposure. These interventions are structured to ensure participants gain both theoretical understanding and practical competencies in advanced and emerging technologies that are closely linked to industry demand. The initiative currently covers 18 of the 36 priority sectoral skills identified under the National Skill Development Mission, spanning areas such as aerospace and aviation, agriculture, automotive, construction, capital goods, electronics, food processing, green jobs, healthcare, life sciences, textiles, information technology and entrepreneurship.

Since its inception, the CSIR Integrated Skill Initiative has trained more than 1.90 lakh individuals through over 5,200 skill based training programmes. Special targeted interventions for rural populations and women were undertaken during the first two phases, expanding access and strengthening inclusive participation. The third phase of the initiative was launched in June 2025 with a renewed focus on advanced skilling, stronger academia industry linkages and accelerated capacity building. In its first year alone, more than 14,000 trainees have been trained through over 425 programmes conducted across 37 CSIR laboratories nationwide.

The CSIR Human Resource Development Centre at Ghaziabad serves as the nodal office and central coordinating unit for the initiative. It plays a critical role in monitoring implementation, evaluating outcomes and ensuring quality and relevance across training programmes. Through continuous assessment and refinement, the initiative seeks to maintain high standards while responding dynamically to evolving industry and technology landscapes.

With its scale, reach and strong alignment with national priorities, the CSIR Integrated Skill Initiative is emerging as a key enabler of India’s skilling ecosystem. By translating scientific capability into employable skills and entrepreneurial capacity, the programme continues to contribute to building a knowledgeable, industry ready and self reliant workforce capable of supporting India’s long term economic growth.
