Indian Railways has announced a major passenger centric milestone with the launch of the country’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train, which will operate between Guwahati in Assam and Howrah in West Bengal. The announcement was made at Rail Bhawan in New Delhi as part of New Year interactions, marking a significant leap in long distance overnight rail travel.
All trials, testing and statutory certification of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train have been successfully completed. The inaugural service on the Guwahati Howrah route will be flagged off in January, formally introducing sleeper variants of the Vande Bharat platform into regular operations. The development is being seen as a transformative step for Indian Railways and a major upgrade in passenger experience.
The new service will benefit several districts across Assam and West Bengal, strengthening rail connectivity in the eastern and northeastern regions. In Assam, the train will serve Kamrup Metropolitan and Bongaigaon districts. In West Bengal, the districts covered will include Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri, Maldah, Murshidabad, Purba Bardhaman, Hooghly and Howrah. Improved connectivity is expected to boost economic activity, tourism and ease of travel for passengers across the region.
The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train will have 16 coaches, comprising 11 three tier AC coaches, four two tier AC coaches and one first class AC coach, with a total passenger capacity of around 823. The service is designed for overnight travel, with a timetable planned to ensure departure from the origin station in the evening and arrival at the destination early the next morning.
A completely new bogie with advanced suspension has been developed for the sleeper variant, raising ride quality and stability standards. The interiors, berths and access ladders have been ergonomically designed with special focus on safety, security and passenger comfort. Noise reduction and improved cushioning are expected to significantly enhance sleep quality during long journeys.
Passengers will also experience region specific culinary offerings. Trains originating from Guwahati will serve authentic Assamese cuisine, while services starting from Howrah will feature traditional Bengali dishes, adding a cultural dimension to the onboard experience.
