The government has stepped up efforts to promote tribal tourism and strengthen community led livelihoods by organising a capacity building workshop for tribal homestay owners, bringing together participants from Gujarat, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim to enhance skills, infrastructure awareness and entrepreneurial capabilities.
The workshop, organised by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs in collaboration with the India Tourism Development Corporation at Hotel Samrat in New Delhi, focused on equipping tribal homestay operators with the knowledge and tools required to participate effectively in India’s growing tourism economy.
The session was led by Manish Thakur Additional Secretary Ministry of Tribal Affairs, who outlined the strategic role of tribal tourism in driving inclusive development while preserving indigenous cultural heritage.
Focus On Community Led Tourism And Livelihoods
The initiative is part of a broader effort to position tribal homestays as engines of local economic growth. By promoting community owned tourism models, the government aims to ensure that income generation opportunities remain within tribal regions while showcasing authentic cultural experiences.
Participants were trained on improving service quality, managing tourism operations and leveraging government schemes to expand their enterprises.
Manish Thakur emphasised that tribal homestay owners play a dual role as entrepreneurs and cultural ambassadors, contributing to both economic development and preservation of traditional knowledge systems.
Flagship Schemes To Strengthen Tribal Ecosystem
The workshop highlighted several key government programmes designed to create an enabling ecosystem for tribal tourism and livelihoods.
The PM Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan focuses on improving core infrastructure in tribal areas, including housing, roads, healthcare, drinking water and education. These interventions are expected to make remote tribal regions more accessible and tourism ready.
The Development Action Plan for Scheduled Tribes provides a convergence based framework that integrates livelihood generation, skill development and cultural preservation. This approach supports sustainable income opportunities while maintaining traditional practices.
The Adi Karmayogi Abhiyan aims to build capacities among tribal communities by enhancing digital literacy, governance awareness and entrepreneurial skills, enabling them to access and benefit from various government initiatives.
Strengthening Skills And Market Linkages
The workshop served as a platform for knowledge exchange and practical training, helping participants understand tourism standards, customer engagement and digital outreach.
Officials highlighted the importance of improving market linkages, branding and visibility for tribal homestays to attract both domestic and international tourists.
The initiative also focused on strengthening last mile delivery of schemes, ensuring that benefits reach grassroots stakeholders effectively.
Strategic Push For Inclusive Growth
The government’s approach integrates tourism with broader development goals, positioning tribal tourism as a key driver of inclusive growth. By combining infrastructure development, skill enhancement and entrepreneurship support, the initiative aims to create sustainable economic opportunities in tribal regions.
The emphasis on cultural preservation ensures that tourism growth does not compromise traditional identities but instead promotes and celebrates them.
The workshop reflects a policy direction that seeks to expand India’s tourism footprint while ensuring that tribal communities are active participants and beneficiaries in the sector’s growth.
