Grassroots AI Innovation Takes Centre Stage at India AI Impact Summit 2026

The Atal Innovation Mission under NITI Aayog emerged as a prominent contributor at the India AI Impact Summit 2026, showcasing how India’s artificial intelligence journey is being shaped simultaneously at the grassroots and policy levels. Through student-led innovation and high-level thought leadership, the Mission underscored the growing alignment between school-based experimentation and national AI priorities.

At the heart of the engagement was the AI Tinkerpreneur Showcase, where 50 student teams from Atal Tinkering Labs across the country presented AI-driven solutions addressing real-world challenges. The innovations spanned healthcare, agriculture, climate resilience, accessibility, education and public service delivery, demonstrating that AI learning at the school level is increasingly translating into scalable, socially relevant applications.

AI Tinkerpreneur, a flagship initiative of the Atal Innovation Mission implemented in collaboration with Intel, is designed to strengthen artificial intelligence competencies, foster creativity and nurture entrepreneurial thinking among school students. The programme encourages participants to identify local problems and develop technology-based solutions using AI tools and structured innovation methodologies.

This year’s edition witnessed participation from more than 12,000 student teams across India. Following a rigorous multi-stage evaluation process, the top 50 teams were selected from diverse geographic and socio-economic backgrounds to present their projects at the Summit. The selected teams represented the length and breadth of the country, reflecting the expanding reach of the Atal Tinkering Labs network.

A notable highlight of the Summit was the AI by HER segment, where girl innovators from Atal Tinkering Labs shared their journeys of building AI solutions, overcoming social and structural barriers and emerging as confident contributors to India’s AI ecosystem. Their projects addressed issues such as food security and safety, accessible and affordable healthcare and indigenous innovation aligned with the Vocal for Local ethos. The segment reinforced the importance of inclusive participation and gender diversity in shaping India’s AI future.

A moment of national significance was marked when an Atal Tinkering Lab student innovator took a pledge alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi, symbolising the collective commitment of India’s youth toward responsible AI development and nation-building. The gesture highlighted the integration of grassroots innovation into the broader national AI narrative.

Beyond student showcases, the Atal Innovation Mission contributed actively to strategic policy discussions at the Summit. Deepak Bagla, Mission Director, Atal Innovation Mission, NITI Aayog, participated in two high-level panel discussions titled “Shaping Resilient Futures in the Age of AI: Leadership for the Technology, Energy, and Security Transitions” and “Investing in Bharat: Regional AI Hubs and Inclusive Growth.” These sessions examined how decentralised innovation ecosystems, regional AI hubs and resilient policy frameworks can strengthen India’s long-term competitiveness in artificial intelligence.

Speaking at the Summit, Deepak Bagla emphasised the importance of ecosystem connectivity in driving national AI leadership. He stated that India’s strength in artificial intelligence will emerge not from isolated breakthroughs but from connected networks linking startups and mentors, innovators and investors, policy and practice. He noted that when these linkages align with national purpose, artificial intelligence evolves from a technological tool into a broad-based national movement aligned with the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.

The presence of Atal Tinkering Labs at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 illustrated the structured pipeline that connects classroom experimentation to national innovation strategy. By integrating early-stage AI learning with entrepreneurship, mentorship and policy dialogue, the Atal Innovation Mission has positioned grassroots innovation as a foundational pillar of India’s AI ambitions.

The Summit participation demonstrated that young innovators from classrooms across India are not passive learners but active contributors to the country’s emerging AI ecosystem. Their engagement signals a maturing innovation culture in which talent development, technological capability and national priorities converge.
