India Adds Record 52537 MW Power Capacity In Ten Months Of FY 2026

India has added a record 52,537 megawatt of power generation capacity during the current financial year 2025–26 up to January 31, 2026, marking the highest ever addition in a single year and registering an increase of over 11 percent in the country’s total installed capacity within just ten months.

Of the total capacity added, 39,657 megawatt has come from renewable energy sources. Solar power accounted for 34,955 megawatt, while wind power contributed 4,613 megawatt, underlining the accelerating momentum of clean energy deployment across the country.

The addition surpasses the previous record of 34,054 megawatt achieved during the financial year 2024–25, establishing 2025–26 as the strongest year yet for capacity expansion.

With the latest additions, India’s total installed power generation capacity has reached 520,510.95 megawatt as of January 31, 2026. Of this, fossil fuel based capacity stands at 248,541.62 megawatt, while non fossil fuel capacity has reached 271,969.33 megawatt.

Within the non fossil fuel segment, renewable energy sources account for 263,189.33 megawatt, and nuclear power contributes 8,780 megawatt. The data reflects the growing share of non fossil fuel sources in the national energy mix, which now exceeds fossil fuel based capacity.

The robust capacity addition during the ongoing financial year signals sustained infrastructure expansion and steady progress toward diversifying India’s energy portfolio. The significant contribution of renewable energy, particularly solar and wind, indicates continued momentum in clean energy investment and project commissioning across states.

The over 11 percent rise in installed capacity within ten months demonstrates the scale and pace of development in the power sector during 2025–26, reinforcing India’s position as one of the fastest growing energy markets globally.
