Make in India drives progress of Mumbai Ahmedabad bullet train project

The Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train project is recording steady on ground progress with the installation of overhead electrification masts advancing across multiple sections of the corridor, marking a key milestone in the development of India’s first high speed rail system.

The progress of overhead electrification works underscores the role of the Make in India initiative in strengthening domestic manufacturing while adopting globally proven high speed rail technology. The installation of overhead electrification masts is essential for enabling electric traction and ensuring safe, smooth and energy efficient bullet train operations.

The work is underway across critical stretches of the alignment, including elevated viaduct sections, where the masts are being installed at significant heights above ground level. In total, more than 20,000 overhead electrification masts, ranging in height from 9.5 metres to 14.5 metres, will be installed along the entire corridor. These structures will support the complete 2×25 kV traction power system, including overhead contact wires, earthing systems, fittings and associated accessories required for high speed train operations.

To ensure uninterrupted and reliable power supply, a network of traction substations and distribution substations is also being developed along the Mumbai–Ahmedabad high speed rail corridor. Together, these systems will form the backbone of the electrical infrastructure needed to support sustained high speed services.

Overhead electrification masts are vertical steel structures installed alongside railway tracks to support overhead electric wires. They play a critical role in maintaining the correct height, alignment and tension of the wires, enabling continuous and safe power supply to electric trains operating at very high speeds.

The progress of the electrification works reflects consistent execution and coordination across multiple engineering fronts. According to Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw, the pace of installation highlights the project’s adherence to planned timelines and its emphasis on quality and safety.

Once completed, the Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train project is expected to significantly reduce travel time between the two cities, improve regional connectivity and deliver wide ranging economic benefits. The project is projected to generate employment, boost local economies and strengthen Indian industry by creating advanced manufacturing and technology capabilities.

The bullet train corridor represents a major step towards the adoption of next generation rail systems and the creation of world class transport infrastructure in India, aligning with the broader national objective of building a modern, self reliant and globally competitive rail network.
