NHAI Ends KYV Requirement for New Car FASTags From February 2026

In a significant move aimed at easing travel for highway users and eliminating post activation inconvenience, the National Highways Authority of India has announced the discontinuation of the Know Your Vehicle process for cars under the Car Jeep Van FASTag category. The decision will apply to all new FASTags issued from 1 February 2026 and is expected to provide substantial relief to millions of private vehicle owners across the country.

The reform addresses long standing grievances faced by motorists who were required to undergo KYV verification even after FASTag activation, despite submitting valid vehicle documents at the time of purchase. This post activation process often led to repeated follow ups delays and service disruptions for commuters using national highways.

Under the new policy framework KYV will no longer be a routine requirement for existing FASTags issued to cars as well. For already issued car FASTags the verification process will be triggered only in specific and complaint driven situations such as reports of loose FASTags incorrect issuance or suspected misuse. In the absence of such complaints no KYV requirement will be imposed on existing users.

To ensure system integrity while simplifying the experience for vehicle owners NHAI has simultaneously introduced stronger pre activation safeguards that place the responsibility of verification squarely on Issuer Banks. FASTag activation will now be permitted only after mandatory validation of vehicle details through the VAHAN national vehicle database. The earlier provision that allowed validation after activation has been completely withdrawn.

In exceptional cases where vehicle details are not available on the VAHAN platform Issuer Banks will be required to carry out verification using the Registration Certificate prior to activation with full accountability. FASTags sold through online channels will also be activated only after complete and verified validation by the issuing bank ensuring uniform compliance across physical and digital modes of issuance.

By shifting all verification requirements to the pre activation stage NHAI aims to eliminate repeated customer interactions after FASTag issuance and significantly reduce grievances. The move is part of a broader effort to make the FASTag ecosystem more citizen centric transparent and technology driven while maintaining high standards of compliance and accuracy.

The decision is expected to streamline toll payment operations improve user satisfaction and reinforce trust in digital tolling infrastructure as FASTag continues to play a central role in India’s national highway transport system.
