Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on 7 January 2026 said that personalities like late Lt Gen Srinivas Kumar Sinha continue to inspire the government’s clear and firm approach on issues related to India’s sovereignty, as the nation moves forward with confidence and resolve.
In a video message delivered during a memorial lecture organised to mark the birth centenary of Lt Gen Sinha, Rajnath Singh paid rich tributes to the distinguished soldier, diplomat and administrator, describing him as an officer who placed the nation above all else. He said Lt Gen Sinha exemplified unwavering loyalty, dedication and integrity in every role he undertook, whether in uniform or in public service.
Recalling his military career, the Defence Minister noted that Lt Gen Sinha, born in 1926, represented India in extremely challenging circumstances on the Burma front during the Second World War. He also highlighted the crucial role played by Lt Gen Sinha in 1947 in coordinating the first airlift of Indian Army troops to Srinagar when Pakistan-backed forces advanced towards Kashmir. Praising his academic and professional excellence at both Indian and British staff colleges, Rajnath Singh described him as a brave officer with exceptional intellect.
The Defence Minister further said Lt Gen Sinha worked consistently to strengthen the Indian Army with modern thinking and institutional depth during his tenures as Director of Military Intelligence, Adjutant General and in various command appointments. He added that Lt Gen Sinha’s service to the nation continued after retirement, as he contributed to strengthening India’s relations with Nepal as ambassador and worked for security and development during his tenures as Governor of Assam and Jammu and Kashmir. Rajnath Singh urged citizens to draw inspiration from Lt Gen Sinha’s ideals in India’s journey towards becoming a secure, self-reliant and prosperous nation.
Chief of Defence Staff Anil Chauhan, in his address, described Lt Gen Sinha as a soldier statesman, scholar warrior and a man of strong character. He called upon members of the armed forces to learn from Lt Gen Sinha’s contributions across both military and civil domains. Stressing the importance of professional military education and integrity, the CDS said senior leadership must foster a culture that values intellectual debate and ethical conduct alongside gallantry.
Highlighting the changing nature of warfare across cyber, space, information and cognitive domains, Anil Chauhan underlined the growing need for soldier scholars who can think, analyse and adapt. He said the Indian soldier must combine courage in uniform, curiosity of mind and an unwavering commitment to constitutional values to not only protect the nation’s borders but also help shape India’s destiny.
