V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority has become the first major port in India to implement a Digital Twin platform for port management, marking a significant technological milestone in the country’s maritime sector and advancing the transformation toward smart and data driven port operations.
The Digital Twin platform was inaugurated on 23 February 2026 by Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister for Ports Shipping and Waterways, as part of the port’s broader modernisation strategy to enhance operational efficiency, transparency and sustainability in maritime logistics.
Real Time Virtual Replica Of Port Operations
The Digital Twin initiative creates a real time virtual replica of the port’s physical infrastructure, operational assets and maritime ecosystem. The platform continuously mirrors the actual port environment using integrated digital technologies, enabling real time monitoring, predictive analytics and informed decision making across various operational functions.
The system integrates advanced technologies including Internet of Things sensors, GPS based tracking systems, LiDAR mapping, drone imaging and a network of CCTV cameras to provide a comprehensive digital representation of the port’s activities.
Through this digital infrastructure, the platform offers continuous monitoring and data integration, allowing operational departments to access accurate real time information on multiple aspects of port management.
Enhancing Operational Visibility And Efficiency
The Digital Twin platform provides live visualisation of key operational parameters such as berth occupancy, vessel movements, crane utilisation and yard capacity. These capabilities allow port authorities to monitor ongoing activities with greater precision and coordinate operations more effectively.
The system also enables predictive maintenance of cargo handling equipment using artificial intelligence driven asset monitoring. By identifying potential equipment issues before they occur, the platform helps reduce downtime and improves reliability of port infrastructure.
In addition, the platform supports intelligent berth planning and traffic optimisation. Advanced scheduling algorithms help streamline vessel arrivals and cargo handling operations, reducing congestion and minimising waiting time for ships at the port.
Supporting Sustainability And Energy Management
A significant feature of the Digital Twin platform is its ability to track energy consumption and emissions across port operations. By analysing energy usage patterns and operational data, the system enables port authorities to implement data driven strategies to improve energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact.
The platform also incorporates scenario simulation capabilities, allowing operators to conduct what if analyses to prepare for peak demand periods or unexpected operational disruptions. These simulations help port managers plan responses to changing operational conditions and ensure continuity of services.
Expected Impact On Port Performance
Officials said the Digital Twin system is expected to significantly improve operational performance at V.O. Chidambaranar Port. The platform is designed to reduce vessel turnaround time by up to 25 percent while improving the availability and reliability of cargo handling equipment.
The system will also strengthen operational safety by generating predictive alerts and early warnings related to equipment performance or operational risks. Improved monitoring and analytics will support better coordination between port departments and maritime stakeholders.
Optimisation of energy utilisation and emissions monitoring will further contribute to environmental sustainability and help the port reduce its carbon footprint.
Phased Implementation Strategy
The Digital Twin initiative is being implemented in a phased and carefully planned manner to ensure seamless integration with existing infrastructure and operational systems.
Once fully implemented, the platform is expected to enhance resilience against operational disruptions, support efficient cargo movement and enable more sustainable and technology driven port management.
Alignment With National Maritime Vision
The implementation of the Digital Twin platform aligns with the broader national vision for modernising India’s maritime sector under Maritime India Vision 2030 and Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasised the importance of digitalisation and advanced technologies in improving the efficiency, transparency and global competitiveness of Indian ports.
Maritime India Vision 2030 outlines globally benchmarked targets aimed at improving ease of doing business, increasing operational efficiency and promoting the adoption of modern technologies across Indian ports.
Leadership Perspective On Digital Transformation
Susanta Kumar Purohit, Chairperson of V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority, stated that the implementation of the Digital Twin platform represents an important step in the port’s modernisation journey.
He said the adoption of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, Internet of Things and real time data analytics will enhance operational efficiency, reduce vessel turnaround time and strengthen safety and sustainability in port operations.
Susanta Kumar Purohit added that the initiative positions V.O. Chidambaranar Port on par with international smart port standards and supports the long term goal of developing technologically advanced and globally competitive maritime infrastructure in India.
The successful deployment of the Digital Twin platform marks a significant step in the evolution of India’s maritime logistics ecosystem and highlights the growing role of digital technologies in transforming port operations.
