Aadhaar App Crosses 14 Million Downloads As One Million Update Mobile Numbers Digitally

The Unique Identification Authority of India has reported strong public adoption of the newly launched Aadhaar App, with nearly 14 million downloads recorded so far and over one million residents updating their mobile numbers directly through the application.

The milestone underscores growing public confidence in secure, digital and convenient Aadhaar services, as the app rapidly emerges as a key interface for managing digital identity across the country.

Launched nationally on 28 January 2026, the next generation Aadhaar App is witnessing an average of more than 100,000 downloads per day. Designed for Aadhaar Number Holders as a privacy first platform, the application allows users to carry, share, show and verify their digital identity in a secure and consent driven manner. It is available on both Android and Apple iOS platforms.

According to UIDAI, the app has already enabled one million residents to update their registered mobile numbers digitally. In addition, 357,000 Aadhaar Number Holders have used the app to lock or unlock their biometrics, while nearly 800,000 residents have downloaded their e Aadhaar through the new platform.

The Aadhaar App incorporates several advanced functionalities aimed at enhancing data security and user control. These include face verification for proof of presence, single click biometric lock and unlock, access to authentication history and a QR based contact card for selective sharing of identity details. The design promotes data minimisation, consent control and selective information sharing, aligning with evolving digital privacy principles.

The application supports a broad spectrum of real world use cases. It enables hotel check ins through Offline Verification Seeking Entity QR code scanning, facilitates age gating, assists in hospital admissions for visitors and attendants, supports event entry verification and allows authentication of gig workers and service partners. UIDAI is also expanding the offline verification ecosystem by registering entities to utilise Aadhaar App features for streamlined service delivery.

A distinctive feature of the app is the ability to manage up to five Aadhaar profiles on a single device, advancing the concept of One Family One App. Beyond address updates and mobile number changes, additional update services are planned in subsequent phases.

UIDAI officials indicated that regular updates, strengthened security architecture and a simplified user interface have contributed to the app’s rapid acceptance across age groups and regions. The surge in downloads reflects ongoing efforts to leverage technology for improved service delivery and to strengthen India’s digital public infrastructure.

As adoption continues to rise, the Aadhaar App is positioned to play an increasingly central role in delivering convenient, secure and inclusive digital identity services nationwide, marking a significant step toward a more digitally empowered society.
