Amrit Bharat Station Scheme Accelerates Railway Modernisation Across India

The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, one of the largest station redevelopment initiatives undertaken by Indian Railways, is progressing rapidly across the country, with eight additional railway stations redeveloped during the past month, taking the total number of completed stations to 180.

The latest stations redeveloped under the scheme include Angamali for Kaladi, Ferok, Nilambur Road and Tripunithura in Kerala; Chhindwara in Madhya Pradesh; Mambalam in Tamil Nadu; Nidadavolu Junction in Andhra Pradesh; and Ramagundam in Telangana.

The scheme represents a long term transformation of railway infrastructure aimed at improving passenger convenience, modernising station facilities and enhancing the overall travel experience across the Indian Railways network.

Large Scale Infrastructure Modernisation

The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme adopts a comprehensive and phased approach to modernising railway stations, focusing on long term infrastructure development and improved passenger amenities.

So far, 1,337 railway stations across India have been identified for redevelopment under the programme. Out of these, work has already been completed at 180 stations located across multiple states and railway zones.

Redevelopment works under the scheme include modern station buildings, improved passenger shelters, upgraded foot over bridges, spacious waiting areas, modern toilets, lifts, escalators, improved lighting systems, parking facilities and dedicated amenities for Divyangjan passengers.

Many stations have also received landscaping improvements, better signage, enhanced security infrastructure and upgraded passenger circulation areas to improve overall accessibility and passenger flow.

Indian Railways officials stated that these improvements are transforming the country’s railway stations into modern transport hubs capable of handling growing passenger volumes while delivering higher levels of comfort and convenience.

Increased Budget And Strong Project Execution

The rapid progress of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme has been supported by a significant increase in railway infrastructure funding in recent years.

Gross Budgetary Allocation for Indian Railways has increased nearly eightfold over the past decade, rising from ₹32,300 crore in the financial year 2014–15 to ₹2,52,200 crore in the financial year 2025–26.

Budget utilisation has also remained strong. Indian Railways achieved 100 percent utilisation of its gross budgetary allocation in the financial year 2024–25 and approximately 97 percent utilisation in the financial year 2025–26 as of 9 March 2026.

Officials say the high utilisation rate reflects a significant improvement in project execution capacity and planning efficiency across the railway system.

Extensive Redevelopment Works Across States

Redevelopment works under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme are progressing across several states including Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Rajasthan.

In Chhattisgarh, major redevelopment works are underway at stations such as Bhilai Power House, Dallirajhara, Raipur Junction and Sarona. Completed works include new station buildings, upgraded platforms, improved waiting areas, lifts, escalators, parking areas and enhanced passenger facilities.

In Delhi, redevelopment activities are progressing at Narela, Subzi Mandi and Tilak Bridge stations with new station buildings, improved platforms, modern toilets, parking facilities, lifts and Divyangjan amenities.

In Karnataka, station improvements are underway at locations including Bangalore Cantonment, Chamaraja Nagar, Ghataprabha, Hosapete and Ranibennur. These projects involve station building upgrades, platform improvements, waiting halls, parking facilities, lifts and escalators.

In Maharashtra, stations such as Palghar, Diva, Mumbra, Titwala, Vikhroli and Igatpuri have seen significant infrastructure improvements including upgraded station buildings, platform surfaces, sewage treatment plants, parking areas and improved passenger circulation.

Similarly, redevelopment projects in Gujarat include Himmatnagar, Dahod, Limkheda, Asarva and Sehore stations, where new station buildings, waiting rooms, circulating areas and modern amenities have been constructed or upgraded.

Major Development In Other Regions

Redevelopment works are also progressing in several other regions of the country.

In Himachal Pradesh, Amb Andaura and Baijnath Paprola stations have been completed while master planning is underway for Palampur Himachal and Shimla stations.

In Jharkhand, development works have been completed at stations such as Balsiring, Bano, Gangaghat, Orga and Tatisilwai with improvements to station buildings, passenger amenities and approach roads.

In Rajasthan, redevelopment works have been completed at stations including Falna, Jawai Bandh, Marwar Junction and Rani under the scheme.

Additional station upgrades are underway across multiple divisions including Ambala division of Northern Railway and Jammu division where stations such as Ambala City, Kalka, Yamunanagar Jagadhari, Patiala, Budgam and Gurdaspur are undergoing infrastructure improvements.

Continuous Upgradation Of Railway Infrastructure

Railway officials emphasised that the development, redevelopment and modernisation of railway stations is a continuous process based on station category, passenger traffic and operational requirements.

The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme has been designed as a long term programme with flexibility for further optimisation through detailed master planning.

The programme aims to transform railway stations into integrated transport hubs while preserving local architectural elements and promoting regional cultural identity through art and design features at stations.

Railways Strengthening Parcel Freight Logistics

Alongside station modernisation, Indian Railways has also launched several initiatives to strengthen freight logistics and improve parcel transportation across the country.

To improve freight handling efficiency, Indian Railways is promoting the development of modern rail freight terminals under the Gati Shakti Multi Modal Cargo Terminal policy.

As of 5 March 2026, a total of 128 Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals have been commissioned across the railway network while in principle approval has been granted for 288 additional terminals.

To improve infrastructure and customer amenities at goods and parcel terminals, Indian Railways has allocated ₹14,500 crore during the financial years 2023–24, 2024–25 and 2025–26.

Rapid Cargo Parcel Services

Indian Railways has also introduced a Joint Parcel Product initiative in partnership with India Post to capture growing demand in business to consumer and business to business logistics markets.

Initially launched as a pilot in 2022, the scheme has now been expanded and renamed Joint Parcel Product Rapid Cargo Service.

Under the scheme, India Post provides first mile pickup and last mile delivery services while Indian Railways handles mid mile transportation through scheduled rail cargo services.

Currently seven pairs of scheduled parcel services are operating under the Rapid Cargo Service network based on market demand and operational feasibility.

During the current financial year up to February 2026, the service generated revenue of approximately ₹56 crore.

Launch Of Rail Parcel Digital Platform

To further strengthen parcel logistics, South Central Railway has launched a pilot project for an integrated app based parcel logistics platform named Rail Parcel.

The platform was launched on 25 February 2026 for a pilot period of one year and functions as a digital marketplace connecting logistics service providers with railway parcel transport services.

Under the system, logistics partners provide first mile pickup, last mile delivery and packaging services while railways provide mid mile transportation through rail services.

The Rail Parcel platform is currently operational at seventeen stations across seven cities including Hyderabad, Vishakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Guntur, Rajahmundry, Bengaluru and Chennai.

Three private logistics partners have been onboarded through an expression of interest process.

Railway officials said that a nationwide rollout of the application will be considered after evaluating the results of the pilot project.

The modernisation of railway stations combined with improved freight logistics infrastructure reflects Indian Railways’ broader strategy to enhance passenger services, strengthen supply chains and improve operational efficiency across the national railway network.
