Delhi University Launches Coffee With Vice Chancellor Initiative

Delhi University has launched a new student engagement initiative titled “Coffee with Vice-Chancellor,” creating a direct platform for dialogue between the Vice-Chancellor and students. The inaugural session featured Vice-Chancellor Prof. Yogesh Singh interacting with students from Miranda House College in an informal discussion held at the Vice-Chancellor’s office.

During the session, Prof. Yogesh Singh addressed a wide range of student queries, including concerns around Artificial Intelligence. Advising a balanced approach, he stated that AI should be treated as an assistant rather than a master, urging students not to fear emerging technologies but to understand and harness them effectively. He emphasized that technological advancements, including India’s success with the Unified Payments Interface, reflect the country’s rapid transformation and growing global capabilities.

Engaging with students on academic matters, Prof. Yogesh Singh explained the importance of Value Addition Courses and Skill Enhancement Courses. He underlined that the core objective of education is to nurture responsible and ethical individuals, stressing the role of moral values, cultural grounding, and patriotism in shaping well-rounded citizens. He added that education must go beyond rote learning to build deeper conceptual understanding and critical thinking.

Responding to a student’s question on expectations, the Vice-Chancellor highlighted the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century. He noted that India is working towards becoming a developed nation by 2047 and called upon students, particularly young women, to contribute actively to this national goal. He stressed the need for bright and committed minds and encouraged students to align their aspirations with the country’s progress.

Prof. Yogesh Singh also reiterated the institution’s responsibility to ensure a safe and secure environment for students. He informed participants that arrangements are being made to install CCTV cameras across the campus to enhance safety measures.

The session saw open and candid discussions, with students sharing their concerns and expectations on various issues. The Vice-Chancellor assured them that their feedback would be taken seriously and addressed at the earliest.

The program was moderated by Prof. Rajni Abbi, Director South Campus, who stated that the initiative aims to provide students with a direct channel to voice their views and engage meaningfully with university leadership. Ten students from Miranda House College participated in the session.

Anoop Lather, Chairperson Cultural Council and PRO, was also present during the interaction. Students expressed satisfaction with the initiative, noting that it offered them a rare opportunity to directly communicate their ideas and concerns to the Vice-Chancellor in an open and approachable setting.

The “Coffee with Vice-Chancellor” initiative is expected to be a regular feature, strengthening participatory dialogue and fostering a more responsive academic environment within Delhi University.
