Nadda Launches AI Enabled E ICU Centre Expands Digital Health Push

Union Health Minister J P Nadda inaugurated an AI Enabled E ICU Command Centre at Yashoda Medicity in Ghaziabad, marking a significant step toward integrating artificial intelligence with critical care delivery and strengthening technology-driven healthcare systems across the country.

The AI Enabled E ICU Command Centre has been designed to integrate artificial intelligence with centralized monitoring systems, enabling real-time supervision of critically ill patients. The facility connects a Base Command Centre at Yashoda Medicity with the ICU facility at MMG District Hospital, providing AI-supported monitoring, early risk alerts and specialist oversight round the clock.

Addressing the gathering, Jagat Prakash Nadda commended Yashoda Medicity for delivering healthcare services across 65 specialities and for establishing a comprehensive multi-specialty ecosystem. He appreciated the integration of the E ICU facility with MMG District Hospital, describing it as an example of collaborative public health strengthening and responsible institutional outreach.

The Minister highlighted that AI-enabled healthcare systems combine timely intervention, diagnostic precision and continuous real-time monitoring, which are crucial in emergency and intensive care settings. He noted that AI-supported ICUs can generate early warnings in adverse clinical situations, assist in identifying high-risk cases and support clinicians with data-driven insights, thereby improving patient safety and outcomes.

Referring to the broader national framework, J P Nadda stated that digital technologies and artificial intelligence have been prioritised under the vision of a Digital and AI-enabled India. He recalled that the National Health Policy 2017 laid the foundation for a comprehensive digital health ecosystem aligned with the Digital India initiative.

The Union Health Minister informed that more than 1.81 lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandirs are now operational nationwide, strengthening primary healthcare delivery. Of these, over 50,000 centres have already been certified under the National Quality Assurance Standards. He announced that the Government has set a target to achieve 100 percent NQAS certification for all Ayushman Arogya Mandirs within the next two years to ensure uniform quality standards.

Highlighting the impact of digital platforms, he stated that the eSanjeevani telemedicine service has delivered over 45.2 crore teleconsultations, significantly expanding access to specialist care, particularly in remote and underserved regions.

The Minister also referred to the U WIN digital platform for tracking maternal and child health services. He informed that U WIN registrations have crossed 11.47 crore, supporting the Universal Immunisation Programme, which provides 27 vaccine doses against 12 vaccine-preventable diseases and has contributed to nearly 99 percent immunisation coverage.

Emphasising advancements in disease control, J P Nadda noted that AI-enabled handheld X ray devices have strengthened tuberculosis screening. He stated that India’s TB incidence decline rate of 17 percent is significantly higher than the global average of 7 percent. He also pointed to improvements in maternal mortality and under-five mortality indicators, attributing the progress to strengthened digital tracking and targeted health interventions.

The Union Health Minister highlighted the launch of the SAHI portal, Strategy for Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare for India, and the BODH initiative, Benchmarking Open Data Platform for Health AI. These initiatives aim to promote ethical, responsible and validated use of AI-based health solutions.

He further underlined India’s global leadership in vaccination and affordable pharmaceutical production, noting that two indigenous COVID-19 vaccines were developed within nine months and over 220 crore doses were administered with full digital certification support.

Referring to Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, J P Nadda described it as the world’s largest publicly funded health assurance scheme, covering approximately 62 crore beneficiaries, including all senior citizens above 70 years of age irrespective of socio-economic status, with coverage of ₹5 lakh per family per year. Citing findings reported in The Lancet, he stated that the scheme has facilitated initiation of cancer treatment within 90 days of detection by reducing financial barriers and improving timely access to care.

The AI Enabled E ICU Command Centre integrates hospital information systems and bedside devices into a central dashboard. AI-driven analytics enable risk stratification, generate alerts for clinical deterioration and facilitate timely, evidence-based interventions through specialist supervision. The model is expected to enhance clinical coordination, standardise treatment protocols and strengthen critical care services at the district level.

Senior officials of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, representatives of Yashoda Medicity, medical professionals and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
