Ashwini Vaishnaw Inspects First Vande Bharat Sleeper Train in New Delhi

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw today inspected India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train at New Delhi Railway Station, marking a significant step forward in the modernisation of long-distance overnight rail travel. The inspection focused on passenger comfort, safety systems and overall readiness of the train ahead of its inaugural run.

During the visit, the Minister closely reviewed the sleeper coaches, including seating and berthing arrangements, interior design, onboard amenities and safety features. Particular attention was given to passenger-centric innovations aimed at enhancing comfort, hygiene and security during overnight journeys.

The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is equipped with automatic doors, the KAVACH train protection system, advanced fire safety mechanisms, disinfectant-based sanitation technology and closed-circuit television cameras in all coaches. Innovative design improvements have been introduced in toilets to ensure better hygiene standards and to prevent water splashing, reflecting Indian Railways’ continued emphasis on cleanliness and passenger convenience.

The train has successfully completed its full cycle of trials, testing and certification and has been declared fully ready for commercial operations. It will operate between Guwahati in Assam and Howrah in West Bengal, providing a modern and efficient overnight travel option across the eastern corridor. The inaugural service on this route is scheduled to be flagged off later this month.

The 16-coach train set comprises eleven AC three-tier coaches, four AC two-tier coaches and one AC first-class coach, offering accommodation for around 823 passengers. It has been engineered with advanced suspension systems and ergonomic interiors to deliver superior ride comfort and reduced noise levels, along with high standards of sanitation throughout the journey.

Passengers will also experience region-specific culinary offerings on board. Services originating from Guwahati will feature authentic Assamese cuisine, while those starting from Kolkata will serve traditional Bengali dishes, adding a distinctive cultural touch to the travel experience.

Designed as a semi-high-speed train with a maximum design speed of up to 180 kilometres per hour, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train represents a new generation of passenger services. It combines modern technology, enhanced safety and improved comfort, underlining Indian Railways’ focus on passenger-centric innovation and faster, more reliable long-distance travel.
